Play Therapy
Helping children express what words sometimes cannot.
Is your child struggling with big emotions, anxiety, anger, behaviours, peer relationships, school, grief, or changes at home?
Children don't always have the words to explain what they are experiencing. Play therapy provides children with a safe, supportive way to communicate, explore emotions, build emotional regulation skills, and make sense of their experiences through play.
At Unique Minds Consulting, I provide child-centered, neuro-affirming play therapy and counselling for children and youth in Abbotsford, BC. With over 30 plus years working with children, my goal is to create space where your child feels accepted, understood, and safe enough to be themselves.
What is Play Therapy
Play is one of the most natural ways children communicate and learn.
Play therapy is built on the understanding that play is a child’s most natural medium of self-expression. It gives children the opportunity to "play out" their feelings and challenges in a safe environment. During sessions, the counsellor observes recurring patterns and themes, which provide a valuable window into how your child experiences and perceives their world.
Every child's inner world is unique. Sessions integrate child-led play, creative expression, and sensory and self-regulation tools (such as fidgets and regulation strategies) tailored precisely to how your child's mind works.
While adults may use conversation to work through difficult experiences, children often communicate through play, creativity, movement, stories, games and imagination. In play therapy, these natural forms of expression can become a pathway for children to explore their feelings, practice new skills, process experiences, and develop a stronger understanding of themselves.
Play Therapy isn't simply "playing with a child". It is a therapeutic approach in which the relationship, environment, and play experiences are intentionally used to support a child's emotional and social development.
Supporting Parents Alongside the Child
Supporting a child also means supporting the adults around them.
Parent involvement can be an important part of the therapeutic process. Depending on your child's needs, I will invite parents in after 4 to 6 sessions. Using a " wraparound approach," these dedicated parent sessions provide an opportunity to discuss what you are noticing at home, understand your child's behaviour from a different perspective, and develop practical strategies to support emotional regulation and connection.
